Christie’s Paris: A pair of ovoid red lacquer vases and covers, Qing dynasty (1644-1911)

The ovoid body of each resting on a slightly flared foot, decorated on each side with an animated landscape in reserve on a background of foliage scrolls, lotuses and eight bajixiang emblems. A scholar is represented painting on a scroll, two scholars are conversing under a pine, two scholars are reading under a pine near an attendant. The upper edge of the foot is underlined by a frieze of stylised banana leaves containing archaic motifs against a leiwen background. The cover is decorated with lotus flowers among foliage and is surmounted by a coral ornament.

Dimensions: 36.5cm, 14 3/8 in high.

Sold on behalf of a German private collector at Christie’s Paris, 16 December 2022 (lot 81) for €10,080 (Estimate €8000-12,000).
