Christie’s Paris: A large bronze figure of a Bodhisattva, Ming dynasty, Hongzhi period, dated 1494

The figure is shown seated in vajrasana on a lotus-form base, his hands together resting on his thighs in dhyanamudra. He is dressed in a dhoti held at the waist and his body is richly adorned with jewelry. Two flowering lotus stems run up the arms and are surmounted by a bird on one side and a vase on the other. His face with half-closed eyes and a smiling mouth is imbued with serenity. The hair is tied up in a bun and the forehead is surmounted by an ornate crown. The back bears an incised inscription.

Dimensions: 41.5cm, 16 3/8 in.

Sold on behalf of a German private collector at Christie’s Paris, 16 December 2022 (lot 86) for €37,800 (Estimate €12,000-18,000).
